Charging Levels
EV charging is categorized into three levels, each offering different speeds and use cases. Understanding these levels helps you plan where and how to charge most effectively.
- Level 1 (120V) — uses a standard household outlet; adds about 3-5 miles of range per hour
- Level 2 (240V) — requires a dedicated circuit or public station; adds 20-30 miles of range per hour
- DC Fast Charging (Level 3) — provides 100-200+ miles of range in 20-40 minutes
Charging Infrastructure
The public charging network is expanding rapidly across the country. Major networks like Tesla Supercharger, Electrify America, and ChargePoint offer thousands of stations along highways and in urban areas.
- Over 180,000 public charging ports available across the United States
- Apps like PlugShare and A Better Route Planner help locate stations in real time
- Many workplaces, hotels, and shopping centers now offer complimentary charging
Road Trip Planning
Road-tripping in an EV is easier than ever with modern route planners and fast-charging networks. Most newer EVs can add substantial range during a quick stop, making long-distance travel practical and enjoyable.
- Built-in navigation in most EVs automatically routes through charging stops
- Plan for 20-30 minute charging breaks every 150-250 miles on long drives
- Pre-condition your battery while driving to optimize fast-charging speed at your next stop
